Easter in the Highlands

When we arrived on easter Sunday the weather was really fair but it was not going to get better! So we had to get going as soon as we arrived. It turned out that the a low pressure would move in delivering a big storm.

The first day turned out to be a big quality mountain day

  • Ben Luis, Ben a Chleibh, Ben Oss, Ben Dubhcraig

Ben Luis

Ben Luis is a fantastic mountain a fine grade 1/2 gully was in excellent condition we opted for the ridge on the right hand side of the above picture.

The following day we opted for a rest! Ben Vorlich near Loch Lomond was todays choice. There was general low cloud and poor visibility but the rain held off. This was an enjoyable day out with a bit of adventure we approached from the power station at the southern end of the ridge.

The picture above was taken from the summit of Ben Bhuidhe. That was a 40 minute long drive in to the end of Loch Fyne. There is a lot of quarry work on the west side of the glen so follow the track up the east side. This was a pleasant 4 mile walk along the glen. The ascent up the mountain was started along quite a deep glen, very picturesque indeed. After crossing some moorland the mountain approach starts. This was a great peak with an excellent build up. We had a wild finish on the summit high freezing cold winds it was good to drop a thousand feet to get into good weather conditions.

The following day was a real treat!

Ben Cruachan

The Ben Cruachan ridge was stunning there was a little snow on the summit but the weather was perfect, much better than anticipated by the forecast. We continued along the ridge to Stob Diamh.

Ben Cruachan is know as the electric mountain and is the site of Scotlands 60 year old amazing pump storage scheme. It’s always worth a visit to the visitor centre which provides visits (must be booked in advance) to the amazing underground engineering works.
